Cinema as Return: AAFF Links Memory, Place, and the Diaspora

Sankɔfa teaches that returning to what has been left behind is necessary when that return equips us to move forward. Film is one of the strongest tools for that work. It records voices, landscapes, conflicts, gestures, and ways of knowing that can otherwise disappear. From October 16–18, 2026, the Abibitumi Abibifahodie Film Festival will gather that work in a hybrid program rooted in Accra and accessible online.

The festival includes feature films, short films, student productions, documentaries, animation, and AI-infused work. Together, these forms create multiple routes into Black memory. Some films recover histories deliberately buried. Others examine the present with a clarity that commercial media avoids. Still others imagine futures grounded in our own cultural and political priorities.

For travelers on a Sankɔfa journey, cinema deepens the encounter with place. A site visit shows where something happened; a film can carry the voices, debates, and consequences that make the place intelligible. For members of the diaspora who cannot be physically present, the hybrid format creates a meaningful line of participation rather than leaving them outside the room.

AAFF also reminds us that preservation is not passive. Choosing what to film, where to screen it, and who frames the discussion are decisions about power. Supporting Black-controlled exhibition spaces helps ensure that our stories remain connected to the communities from which they come.

Explore the official AAFF program and updates, and reserve October 16–18 for a journey through Black memory on screen.
